addendum: hoarding update

Today I played Hunkering Down and Making Do. (copyright grumpy bastard.) This involved buying lots of frozen concentrated orange juice on sale. And toilet paper. And coffee. And, of course, polenta.

Opinions on freezing cheese? Yes? No?

that's a qualified yes

or possibly it should be "unqualified" since I'm not exactly a foodsafe expert. But I think you can freeze blocks of hard cheese. not sure how the soft ones would work out, texture-wise. so probably best not to buy bargain lots of triple cream brie. (i'm almost sure any luxury item like that it required by law - the Elitist laws, if not our own civic laws - to be something that must be used up immediately, in one go. Unless you're talking jars of anchovies, but why would we do that, anyway?!)

and now I'm going to go gorge myself on that other inexpensive staple of Hunkering Down, popcorn! (alas, without the parmesan cheese. OOH, wait, I think Dad has some in the fridge - scarfing your families's groceries being a large part of Making Do, if you're lucky enough to live in the same city and they're foolish enough to let you have keys to their houses.)

I also have a Brother Cadfael dvd to watch, borrowed for free from the library. They have a fair selection of videos to watch (not many dvds yet but they're getting there, and at least they have some good ones), and did I mention they're free? Wheee. I've put a hold in for the first dvd for the Ballykissangel series, so at some point I'll get to watch the bit of the series I missed. AND they have "Monarch of the Glen", though just in video and I've seen all the episodes they have 'in stock' already.

Not that I'm trying to dis using video stores - especially Pic-a-Flic, for those in Victoria, though my old neighbourhood on Oswego Video is also cool. I'm just pleased there's a low-cost alternative :)

cheers, the other C

and i breeze in to casually comment on cheese freezing. which i'm generally in favor of. the store here a lot like Costco where I shop for imported goodies sometimes has large blocks of jalapeno jack cheese for really cheap - US$7 or so - and I buy twelve, throw em in the freezer and cheese out to heart's content at my leisure. it does make them crumblier than cheese should be. but i can cope in order to have cheap non-moldy cheese.

off to nosh on goodies from PEI - they have a trade mission to barbados this week and i've been invited to one of the receptions - hooray smoked salmon here i come.

in very brief updates - had a terrible flu, nine days flat on my back only getting up to go to the loo and to the doctor's office. lost 15 pounds (10% of my body mass! i'm so skinny and it's pathetic how much i'm enjoying it, really really pathetic... can you say cropped tops?) and i'm doing such a good job at the job i don't like very much that i've been effing promoted. well, i will be in january.

love you kitten.

Please don't freeze cheese. Pleeeeease. Freeze the coffee if you must, but not the cheese. That's just plain unnatural. And evil. I thought better of you.

Don't let Princess Peacock sway you - poor is poor and you can freeze your cheese. It will change the texture, make it very crumbly so it's best melted on things, but it's entirely do-able. And it makes it last. So there.

Well, now, 'poor' is a complex socioeconomic status -- further (let's say) problematized (or equivalent long word) by transnational capitalism -- that I feel I really have no claim to. What I am is plain old Broke.

In other words, Blah Blah Blah.

Fine. Broke is broke.

But that doesn't change the fact that you can freeze cheese.

And I am! As we type.

I can hear the Peacock screaming from here...

(Don't worry, dear, it wasn't very good cheese to begin with. The brie remains at the proper temperature.)
