[livejournal.com profile] argus_in_tights wrote a delightful email to say he'd seen Nobody's Father on the ferry and read my essay in the gift shop. I'd forgotten people might actually see the book in stores.

There's something perfect about the book being on the ferry, since the ferry (or at least the lineup) is in the essay.

He called himself a "word thief" because he read the book in the shop instead of buying it. Being sneaky about books is a part of loving them. Reading is private, and reading in public is just slightly perverse.

As the ex-co-con discovered while reading the new Maupin, also on the ferry.

I forgot to mention that I'd read the essay. We got a review copy in our office and I read a few of them before our EIC took the book. I'm not sure that the review was ever written though. :)

It was an excellent piece... in case you were wondering.

I am always wondering.

Thank you. Am always eager for your opinion.

I did enjoy the bits about ferries but I think the detail I enjoyed most was the description of the public art outside of the police station and the meal you were eating while being proposed to. Still one of my favourite restaurants. Stealing your words was definitely the highlight of my trip. And to think I'd initially gone in looking for another friend's book (his wasn't there)
