garlic impressions
Excellent gift discussion, comrades. Thank you!
Let me try this out on you, though. Let's say you said to me "I lost my favorite cast iron pan," and I said "Look! To replace it, I bought you this awesome nostick microcoated ultralight polymer chafing dish!" or "This antique ash-heated clay warming sphere!"
Wouldn't you be like, "Frac, that is so awesome. Now all I need to be happy is a cast iron pan."
I agree that the mortar and pestle is both beautiful and superior in action. I only fear it would be puzzling as a replacement for a garlic press.
Although maybe a whole different category of object is a good idea. Then you can't get the Wrong One.
It's all so confusing. Me, I use the flat side of a knife.
!
I suppose I could get him a nice knife. Hmm. Possible.

And I know you are not Italain. Just thought I would add my cultural paranoia to the gift-giving discussion.
(and like I said, Ikea, excellent garlic press, not a knife).
Oh, and as a joint part of the gift, kainhighwind_dr has this rubber tube thing, which, provided you put a clove of garlic in it with the skin on, and roll it against the counter, will remove the skin and keep the garlic in tact. Very cool.

Plus, the original concept (the mat ones) were a Canadian invention. We rock. ;D

I can't afford a really nice knife anyway. And I love the Canadian connection of the tube. I can be all: here. It's like basketball.

We have a garlic press (though I also use a knife when I'm feeling too lazy to clean the thing), and it's a Zyliss from Penna and Co. Sounds exactly like inlandsea's model, complete with nice solid metal construction, rounded garlic well, and blue rubberized handle grips (great for arthritic hands). I'm happy with it, and I don't much like garlic presses normally.
Good luck finding your perfect gift!

At any rate, you could go to Penna & Co. (Broadmead Village) OR the fancy kitchen shop in Mayfair Mall (across from Spencer Gifts I think) OR the kitchen shop on the north side of the Bay Centre (near the alley with the Tapa Bar.. can't recall the name).
These shops should also have the garlic peeling tubes and/or mats.

And kitchen things, obviously.
