Jul. 23rd, 2004 10:36 amWhen I was younger, but not perhaps as much younger as I should have been, I was in love with Seymour Glass.
Seymour is the oldest brother in J.D. Salinger's Glass Family stories, which are kind of like a smart kid's fantasy of the ultimate cool family. (They all read several languages and Strive For Enlightenment. Most of the stories are narrated by Buddy "I'm Not a Stand-In For the Author" Glass.) Disgusted with the World, and his own stalled spiritual development, Seymour commits suicide in a hotel room in Florida.
One day, while out walking, I composed the following song to him:
Seymour Glass-- well, did you?
Did you see through?
Did you get past?
Did you see your own reflection?
Did it make you want to smash
the glass
Did you really see more
Seymour Glass?
I'm not sure I could describe the tune. Maybe I can find a page that generates musical scores and you can hum it. Most of the songs I make up while walking follow tunes close enough to pop hits of the 80's to merit at least the threat of a lawsuit should they ever be overheard, which I trust they never will be.
I should add that the "see more" pun is Salinger's, not mine. I was re-reading _Nine Stories_ today. I've beed reading a lot of short stories lately for the sense of achievement.
Another text consumed! Ha!
I had a haircut today, but that is Another Story.
